Richard Becker

Richard "Dick" "Poppie" "Pa" Becker, 85, of Crystal Lake, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2023.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; two sons, Ryan and Daniel (Nicole); and six grandsons, Weston, Bo, Nathan, Jackson, Matthew and Benjamin.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Alice and Roy Becker and his brothers, James and Robert.

A lifelong interest in gymnastics began at Lane Tech Preparatory High School as a member of the Social Turners. He attended Michigan State University where he was awarded a scholarship in gymnastics. Dick participated in and was an integral part of the 1958 and 1960 National Collegiate Gymnastics Champions, competing in individual events: floor, rings and parallel bars. He participated in the ROTC program and earned a degree in Physical Education.

Upon graduation, Dick began his 37 year career at New Trier High School as a physical education teacher and diving coach. His diving team went on to win multiple State Championships.

After retirement, his second act was a manager and personal trainer for 20 years at the Holiday Inn, Health Club, located in Crystal Lake.

Dick loved all genres of music and singing.  He could often be heard humming songs and often sang with the St. Thomas Choir. During his retirement years, he spent many wonderful days and seasons at his beloved Turner Camp cottage, even doing a little coaching along the way. Dick enjoyed spending time with many lifelong friends, family and, most of all, enjoying the next generation of Becker boys.

The legacy he left at Illinois Turner Camp and throughout his whole life will not soon be forgotten.

A memorial mass will be held on Friday, July 21, 2023 at 1:30pm,  St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 451 W. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake.

A memorial to celebrate Dick's life will also be held on his birthday, August 25, 2023, at Illinois Turner Camp beginning at 4:00pm.   Cash only food and beverages.
