Robert Edward Dimond, a former Publisher and resident of Lake Barrington, died peacefully on July 13th at the age of 86. He was surrounded by his two loving daughters Melinda Hendrickson and Michele Keating and his sons-in-law, Kyle Hendrickson and Tim Keating.
Robert is also survived by his son Mark, and his wife Carrie. A proud, doting grandfather, "Grandpa D" is also greatly loved and missed by Peter Mitchell, Ted Keating, Adam Keating, Jack Keating, Beth Keating, Cam Dimond, Tyler Dimond and Chase Dimond. He was so proud of their accomplishments in school, athletics, and in Ted's case, so very proud of his service to our country during his 8 years in the Navy.
Bob was the 7th of 9 siblings raised in the Washington DC area, and during high school, where his talent for writing was discovered by a teacher at Eastern High School, Dr. Regis Boyle. He was hired by the Washington Star at the age of 15 where he worked part time until he graduated from George Washington University with a degree in Journalism. He went on to build an impressive career as a publisher for a number of successful office products and information systems magazines. A little-known fact was that he was the first keynote speaker at one of the early Comdex shows in 1979, which became one of the largest computer trade shows in the world (a few years later a young computer entrepreneur/college drop-out named Bill Gates would keynote a much different and larger Comdex show).
Bob also was a talented chorus singer and during his time living in Naples up until 2019, was a leading baritone in the Men's Choir of Naples where he performed regularly at local events, churches and assisted living facilities. His voice, like his being, was gentle, warm, and filled with honest emotion and joy. His talent for singing was apparent, and he would sing the most beautiful lullabies to each of his children to send them off to sleep. He was an amazing storyteller and would often share colorful stories from his childhood that he made so vivid with his command of details and language that listeners couldn’t help but be transported to that place and time. He loved being a dad and whether it was a trip to the grocery store, a holiday celebration, or a family vacation, his love for life and enthusiasm and wonderful humanity always elevated those moments for all around him.
Bob is survived by Patty Dimond, to whom he was married from 1966-1987, and predeceased by his wife, Carol Mantia, who passed away in 2018 in Naples, Fl.
