Robert “Bob” L. Smith
July 13, 1934 – August 19, 2025
Robert “Bob” L. Smith, 91, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2025. Born on July 13, 1934, Bob lived a full and colorful life marked by curiosity, hard work, and devotion to his family.
Bob initially pursued a career in dentistry, earning his degree and entering the profession. However, he soon discovered it was not his true calling. Always one to follow his instincts, Bob shifted paths and went on to serve as Township Supervisor of Stickney, where he worked to support his community. Later, he embraced entrepreneurship, purchasing The Old Barn restaurant. Under his guidance, The Old Barn became a local landmark and stayed in the family for 40 years, serving as both a gathering place and a testament to his commitment to hospitality.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Laura Smith, with whom he shared many decades of marriage and countless cherished memories. Together, they built a home filled with warmth, laughter, and love.
Bob is survived by his sons, Robert J. (Madeline) Smith and John P. (Mary Kay) Smith; his treasured grandchildren, Jake and Emi, and Alex (Ally), Matthew, and Monica; as well as extended family and dear friends who will remember him fondly for his kindness, humor, and unwavering support.
A man of integrity, humility, and boundless energy, Bob valued family above all else. He took great joy in the successes and milestones of his children and grandchildren, always offering encouragement and a listening ear.
A private family service will be held to honor Bob’s life, with burial to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a charity of your choice in his memory.
