Rodney Devon Hamilton, also known affectionately as “Rod”, died May 15, 2024 at the Alden Courts Memory Care Center in Elk Grove, Illinois at the age of 91. Rod was born May 4, 1933 in Frankfort, Indiana to Willard and Catherine Hamilton. He was the second oldest of four children – George, Carol, and Larry. Rod graduated from Frankfort High School in 1951 before heading off to attend Indiana University in Bloomington. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1955 and his master’s degree in 1957. After graduating from IU, Rod joined the U.S. Army, first completing basic training at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri and then being assigned to a post in New York City.
After being honorably discharged from the U.S. Army, Rod moved to Barrington, Illinois to take a job with The Quaker Oats Company where he would work for many years until his retirement. His greatest highlight and experience at Quaker Oats was meeting Joyce Granquist and they were married on June 17, 1967 at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ also in Barrington. They went on to adopt two sons, Russell Scott in 1970 and Eric Allen in 1972 and resided in Barrington until his death.
Rod was a man of deep faith and he was a long-standing active member of the Willow Creek Community Church congregation in South Barrington, Illinois dating from 1985, In addition to regularly attending services, he actively participated in many ministries and activities there, including the Saturday morning cleaning team, singing in the church choir, working on the Monday night tape team, working the global conference and ministry teams, and serving with the senior Mail Team.
Rod also was very active and engaged in pursuing a wide range of interests and hobbies throughout the years. These ranged from stamp and coin collecting to growing flowers (from African Violets to Tuberous Begonias to Orchids and many others) to keeping a vegetable garden to fishing (especially at the family summer home in Wisconsin) and working on various projects with his hands. He was also a very outgoing and social person who loved to converse about many different subjects.
Rod is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Joyce, and his son, Eric as well as three grandchildren, a brother, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Russell, a brother, and a sister.
A Celebration of Life service will be held for Rod in the Chapel of Willow Creek Community Church, 67 Algonquin Rd, Barrington, on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. immediately followed by a luncheon at the church. Davenport Family Funeral Homes and Crematory in Barrington, Illinois is assisting the family during this time.
