Ross N. Alexander, aged 53, of Yucca Valley, California, formerly of Barrington Illinois, passed away in April 2025. Ross was born on April 26, 1972 to the late Stuart and Diane Nussbaum.
Ross grew up in Riverside, California and graduated summa cum laude from UCLA with a degree in political science. Ross was so excited when he found out he was admitted to Harvard Law School that he jumped fully clothed into his parent’s pool! After Ross graduated from Harvard Law School, he moved to Chicago and married his HLS classmate Debi Neal (nka Debi Hurlock). Ross had a beautiful singing voice and surprised Debi by singing to her during their first dance at their wedding.
Ross and Debi had two beautiful daughters – Raven and Lili. Ross was exceedingly proud of his daughters. When the girls were young, Ross used to love to read and sing to them, dance with them to Disney songs and have pretend sword fights. After Ross and Debi divorced, he moved back to California, where he became a special education teacher.
Ross spent his life devoted to his ideals of helping others and making a difference in the world around him, through teaching, writing and advocating for a just society. Ross enjoyed music, movies, basketball, vegan dining and current events.
Although Ross struggled with long-standing mental illness which unfortunately led to challenges in his relationships, he had a good heart and always wanted the best for his family and others.
He is survived and mourned by his daughters Raven Hurlock and Lillian Hurlock; ex-wife Debi (Scott) Hurlock; Aunt, Joan Loren; Uncle, Paul (Barbara) Friedman; and cousins, Davia (Jane) Loren, Adam (Jackie) Loren, Noah (Rebecca) Loren, and Greg (Sonia) Friedman. He was preceded in death by his parents Diane and Stuart Nussbaum and his uncle, Allan Loren.
A celebration of Ross’ life will be held on Sunday, June 22, 2025 with a visitation beginning at 2 p.m. until the time of service at 5 p.m at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 941 S. Old Rand Rd., Lake Zurich, Illinois 60047.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), PO Box 49104, Baltimore, MD 21297.
