Sam Sweeney

Samuel Joseph Sweeney, was born on January 11, 1988 in Barrington, Illinois, and passed away unexpectedly on February 9th in Huntley, Illinois, surrounded by his loving family and friends. His loss is both tragic and immeasurable, leaving an ache that words cannot fully capture. Though his passing was sudden, his legacy lives on through the many lives he touched.

Sam was born, raised, and lived in Crystal Lake—a community he deeply loved, and one that loved him just as much in return.

A passionate advocate for the tennis community, Sam dedicated his life to the sport. He served as a tennis professional with the Crystal Lake Park District Racket Club and at the Crystal Lake Country Club. Earlier in his career, he was the Varsity Tennis Coach at Prairie Ridge High School and Crystal Lake Central High School. A two-time ITA All-American, Sam was inducted into the North Central College Athletic Hall of Fame. He achieved a world ranking after earning ATP doubles points on tour.

Just as he did on the court, Sam worked tirelessly in the classroom, earning his bachelor’s degree in biology and his master’s degree in counseling - accomplishments that reflected his determination and drive. Despite these accomplishments, Sam remained humble and never stopped making his family proud.

Sam is survived by his cherished family, Kellirose, his wife and the love of his life; Noah (7), his firstborn son and best buddy; and Lillian (5), his cherished daughter and the apple of his eye. Sam met Kellirose in middle school, married her years later, and from that day forward she remained the greatest love and pride of his life.

Beloved son to Jack Sweeney and Kim Dinham Sweeney, loyal brother to Dan and Robin, fun-loving uncle, and devoted friend, Sam brought his parents and siblings tremendous joy. He was known for his infectious sense of humor, his generous spirit, and his instinct to put others before himself.

Visitation for Sam will be held at Davenport Funeral Home, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake, on Friday, February 20, from 4:00 until a Eulogy Service at 8:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Thomas Church, 451 W. Terra Cotta Ave., in Crystal Lake, on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Crystal Lake Memorial Park Cemetery, where Sam will be laid to rest near his grandparents, John and Bernice “Bunny” Sweeney.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the family’s GoFundMe page at https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-for-the-sweeney-family-qj4e2. All funds raised will be used solely for the care, support, education, and future of Noah and Lilly, helping to pave the way for the life these two wonderful children deserve.
