Shawn Michelle (nee Burau) Tegtmeier, 62 of Crystal Lake, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on May 28, 2026. She was born on February 8, 1964 in Chicago to Donald and Jarlath (nee Mulcrone) Burau.
Shawn filled her life with purpose and joy. Personal training her many clients was her life’s passion, along with coaching multiple running groups and working at the local Running Depot. She dedicated a lot of time to her community by playing an instrumental role in organizing events for the Crystal Lake Park District including its annual half marathon, the Cardboard Regatta, the Aquathon and numerous other special events that brought people together. She was also an avid runner herself having participated in many races including marathons and ultramarathons.
When she wasn’t giving back, Shawn enjoyed spending time outdoors and was an animal lover. She treasured all of the time she spent with her family, friends and fur babies. She loved traveling - especially to Naples, Florida, where she found peace in the sunshine.
In the early 1990’s Shawn and Gary met while working at an apartment complex in Palatine. They soon fell in love and spent the next 33 years building a life together and supporting one another through every adventure and accomplishment.
Gary Alan Tegtmeier, 63 of Crystal Lake, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2026, with his loving family by his side. He was born on January 30, 1963 to Robert and Dorothy (nee Jaster) Tegtmeier.
Gary was a hardworking man who found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He was an avid fisherman and treasured the time he spent out on the water. Whether he was tinkering with something small, rebuilding a car and bikes, or fixing just about anything that needed attention, he had the ability to restore anything back to working order.
He dedicated 20 years of service to the City of Crystal Lake Street Department where his strong work ethic and dependability earned the respect of his colleagues. Above all, he was Shawn’s biggest supporter, standing beside her though every community event with encouragement and a helping hand wherever needed.
Shawn and Gary are survived by their sons, Alex (Meghan) Olejniczak and Matt (Jessica Shields) Tegtmeier; Gary’s siblings, Rick (Barb) Tegtmeier and Judy (Gary) Zimmer; Shawn’s siblings, Sheila Burau, Derek (Lara) Burau, and Sharyl (Steve Amick) Burau; and many loving nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Life will be held for Shawn and Gary on Sunday, July 12, 2026 from 12pm until 8pm at Crystal Lake Brewing, 150 N. Main St., Crystal Lake, 60014.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, P.O. Box 414238 Boston, MA 02241-4238 or to Helping Paws Woodstock, 2500 Harding Ln, Woodstock, IL 60098.
