Stephen Bruington “Steve” Newton, 91, of Crystal Lake, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2026. He was born on December 24, 1934, in Freeport, Illinois, to Milledge and Pauline Newton.
Steve lived a life marked by curiosity, compassion, intelligence, and quiet dedication to others. His early years were shaped by both hardship and resilience, including the loss of his father and older brother at a young age and the loss of the family home to fire. Through it all, he never forgot the loving support of his aunts Peg, Meg, Deetie, and Anne, who helped his family rebuild life in the Ozarks.
A lifelong learner, Steve earned his Bachelor of Arts in Botany from the University of Missouri in 1956. He proudly served in the United States Army in Korea from 1956 to 1958 before continuing his education at the University of Illinois, where he received both his M.S. in Microbiology and his Ph.D. in Food Science.
Steve’s career reflected both his scientific mind and his gift for communication. He worked for Pillsbury in Indiana and Minnesota, Quaker Oats in Barrington, Food Product Development Magazine, and Sara Lee before beginning a long career as a freelance technical writer in 1981. He continued that work until his retirement in 2008, serving clients across a wide range of manufacturing industries. He was also a proud member of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi science honorary society.
While attending the University of Missouri, Steve met Marilyn Morgan, the love of his early life. The two were married on June 8, 1958, in Keokuk, Iowa, and together raised their three children, Gregory, Curtis, and Amy. The family eventually settled in Crystal Lake in 1972.
When Marilyn developed chronic debilitating illnesses, Steve devoted himself fully to her care for many years until her passing in 1996, a reflection of the steady love and loyalty that defined his life.
Later in life, Steve found love again with Sally Harris. After building a life together following the loss of their first spouses, the couple married in Crystal Lake on November 10, 2010.
Steve was known by all who loved him as a gentle and caring soul with a quiet, quirky sense of humor and an endless curiosity about the world around him. Whether discussing science, reading a new book, supporting his children’s interests, or enjoying homemade desserts and ice cream with family, Steve approached life with warmth and appreciation.
His compassion extended far beyond his family. He helped welcome and support a Chilean refugee family in the 1970s, volunteered in prison ministry, and faithfully served at the Crystal Lake Food Pantry for many years. He also cared deeply about the environment and community involvement, supporting recycling efforts long before they became commonplace.
Steve is survived by his wife, Sally Harris; his children, Gregory David Newton (Jane) of Athens, Ohio, Curtis James Newton (Jennifer Evans) of Boston, Massachusetts, and Amy Jeanette Newton (Kurt Johnson) of Beaverton, Oregon; his grandchildren, Carrie Dicks (Aaron), Andrew Newton (Brittanie), Gus Bowder-Newton (Sage Plante), Georgia Bowder-Newton (Henry Nelson), Bradley Johnson, and Sarah Johnson; and his great-grandchildren, Jensen Dicks, Elodie Newton, and Gabriel Newton.
He is also survived by Sally’s children, Craig Harris, Michael Harris (Crystal), and Maribeth Harris; step-grandchildren Jordan Harris and Chloe Harris; Marilyn’s brother David Morgan (Judith) and sister Janice Morgan; along with many extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marilyn; his parents; and his brother, Jim.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, June 15, at 12:30pm with a visitation to begin at 11:30am, at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Interment will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Crystal Lake Food Pantry in Steve’s memory.
