Stevenson "Steve" Mountsier

Stevenson Mountsier, a devoted family man, community servant, and eternal optimist, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2026, in Lake Barrington, Illinois. He was 96 years old.

Born on March 27, 1930, in Nutley, New Jersey, to Silas Rush Mountsier Jr. and Margaret Mountsier. Steve grew up in a close-knit family alongside his siblings Bob, Jack, Silas, Bill, Sally, and Betsy. He attended elementary and secondary school in Nutley before pursuing higher education at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania.

Steve proudly served his country during the Korean War as an Army supplies officer. Following his military service, he embarked on a lifelong career with DeSoto Inc., which took him and his beloved wife Sylvia across the country. Their journey began in Dallas, Texas—where their son Tom was born—and continued to San Francisco—where their daughter Amy joined the family. Steve’s career later led them to Chicago, Toronto, and back to Chicago, where he concluded his professional tenure.

After retiring from DeSoto Inc., Steve’s dedication to public service flourished. Steve was the president of district 220 school board, a Cuba Township committeeman, was active in the Barrington Area Development Council and very involved in his church. In 1997 Steve was elected to the Lake County Board in Illinois and served with distinction for 15 years before retiring at the age of 82. His commitment to bettering his community was unwavering and reflected his deep sense of responsibility and generosity.

A lifelong member of the Methodist Church, Steve found spiritual fulfillment as an active participant at Barrington United Methodist Church. His faith guided him throughout his life and inspired his many acts of kindness and service.

Steve’s passions extended far beyond his professional and civic endeavors. His adventurous spirit led him to travel extensively around the world, creating cherished memories with Sylvia and their family. Annual vacations to the Jersey Shore were particularly special to Steve.

Known for his boundless optimism and warm demeanor, Steve had a unique ability to brighten any room he entered. Steve’s love for his family knew no bounds. He was always ready to lend a helping hand or offer support—whether it was driving a grandchild to practice or music lessons or leading his grandkids community in building a playground or simply being present for those he loved most, it was known that Steve could always be counted on.

Steve is survived by his children Tom (Tracy), Amy (Tim); his four grandchildren Ryann Brewer (Will), Erin Wahl, Thomas Wahl and Caitlin Timmins (Jack), two great grandchildren Hue Logan and Celine Brewer and his brother Silas Rush Mountsier III (Graeme). He was predeceased by his wife Sylvia Thomas Mountsier; parents Silas Rush Mountsier Jr. and Margaret Mountsier; siblings Robert Mountsier, Jack Mountsier, Bill Mountsier; sisters Sally Dietrich and Betsy Diachun; Steve leaves behind a legacy of love that will endure through generations.

Steve’s life was one of purpose, generosity, humor, and unwavering optimism—a life well-lived that touched countless others along the way. May those who knew him find comfort in their memories of this remarkable man who truly embodied kindness.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers or gifts donations may be made towards Barrington United Methodist Church or Guide Dogs for the Blind
