William Albert Hartmann, Sr., born on February 22, 1932 in Chicago, IL, peacefully passed away on March 14, 2024. He leaves behind a legacy of remarkable accomplishments and unwavering dedication. Hailing from Chicago, Illinois, William graduated from Hirsch High School in 1950 before pursuing higher education at Northwestern University, where he graduated in 1954. His pursuit of knowledge paved the way for a lifetime of success and service.
Following graduation, William served honorably as a Seaman in the US Navy from 1954 to 1956, stationed aboard the USS Valley Forge. During his service, his passion for music flourished as a member of the Valley Forge Choraliers, who notably appeared on the Steve Allen Tonight Show on NBC. William's career path then led him to become a distinguished director for WGN from the 1960s to the mid-1980s. He left an indelible mark on television programming, directing iconic shows such as Bozo, Ray Rayner & Friends, Romper Room, Garfield Goose, and Family Classics, among others. In the late 1980s, William transitioned to academia, sharing his wealth of knowledge and experience as an Associate Professor at Columbia College and Northeastern Illinois University. His passion for teaching and mentorship touched countless lives, leaving a lasting impact on his students.
Beyond his professional achievements, William was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He treasured moments spent with his family, creating enduring memories.
William is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Mary Helen Hartmann (nee Slavin), his children William Jr. (Nonette) Hartmann, Mary Suzanne (Charles) Thyfault, and Jon (Cindy) Hartmann, as well as his grandchildren Bradley, Brian, Samantha, Anne, Abigail, Maureen, and Juliana. He is preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Anna Hartmann, and his sister Dorothy (Lloyd) Whitney.
William A. Hartmann will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His kindness, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to his craft leave an enduring imprint on the world.
A visitation for William will be held on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 from 9:30 AM until the time of Mass at 11 AM at Saint Anne Catholic Community,120 Ela St (Corner of Franklin and Ela Sts), Barrington, IL 60010. The committal will be held privately.
