William "Snappy" Martin Smith, III

William Martin Smith, III, affectionately known as Marty "Snappy" Smith, of McHenry, was born to William H. Smith, Jr. and Mary L. Rees on July 15, 1950.  He passed away on February 5, 2023, at the age of 72.

After graduating from Barrington High School, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served in Vietnam.  Marty was a former F-4 Plane Captain for Marine Corps VMFA-122 and studied Phantoms F-4 at USMC.  He also studied Business Marketing at University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh.  Ever since his honorable discharge in May of 1972, Snappy had been an active volunteer serving wounded veterans and military personnel.

He is survived by his stepmother, Diane Smith, and his son, William "Marty" Smith, IV, along with extended family and countless friends.

A memorial visitation will be held on Friday, February 24, 2023, from 4:00pm until a service with military honors at 7:00pm at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake.
