Obituary

Agnes Estelle Lagerquist (nee Moe) was born on November 10, 1934 and passed away on September 18, 2022. Agnes was a lifelong resident of the Chicago area. Relocating with family to the suburb of Palatine, Illinois in 1969, she resided the last seven years in Lake Barrington and Cary. She attended Norman Bridge Elementary School in Chicago, then Steinmetz High School. Agnes married Norman Frank Lagerquist on May 22, 1954, after a chance meeting at the Hollywood Roller Skating Rink two years earlier.

Music was a lifelong passion. A highlight of Agnes’ teen years was singing in the Hi-C Student Chorale, a youth choir of over 150 voices. She could play piano by ear and had an extensive repertoire of traditional hymns. Her vibrant personality was expressed in her piano playing, often at full volume with prodigious use of the pedals.

Faith was central to her life from the beginning. In early youth, she was active in Salem Evangelical Free Church and then Addison Heights Bible Church. As an adult she attended Grace Evangelical Free Church, often playing  piano for church events. In later years Agnes attended Willow Creek Community Church, and Harvest Bible Chapel.

She was always helping others, and her nurturing spirit was reflected in her career choices. Agnes became a nurse’s aide in early adulthood and was later awarded an Associate in Applied Science - Nursing degree at Harper College. In 1975, she earned a license as a registered professional nurse. Her desire for additional education led her to pursue a Bachelor of Science Degree at Northern Illinois University, which she successfully completed in 1991.

Agnes loved to sew, making clothing for herself and family members, as well as knitting beautiful samplers, afghans, and quilts. She liked to memorize the books of the Bible and enjoyed reciting the names of the Old and New Testament books in order. She enjoyed solving “Jumble” word puzzles that appeared in the daily paper.

Devoted to her family, Agnes had a true mother’s heart. As her own children grew, she welcomed her grandchildren, which meant the world to her. Known affectionately by her two granddaughters, Carly and Emily, as ‘Aggie Grandma’, she and husband ‘Papa’ cherished time spent with them as they grew, and were avid supporters of booster activities at their schools.

She is survived by her sons, Norman Paul of Lawndale, California and Paul Bryan of Cary, Illinois; grandchildren, Carly Elizabeth (nee Lagerquist) McClain of Tampa, Florida and Emily Faith Lagerquist of Cary, Illinois; and siblings Ardyce Edelle (nee Moe) Gillin her twin sister, and Stanley Douglas (Ulla Marie) Moe.
