Obituary

Arthur Dennis Kinney, Jr., age 90, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 3, 2023.

Arthur was born January 5, 1933, in Trenton, NJ. He attended secondary school at Peabody High School and Fork Union Military Academy in Pittsburgh. He played football, and joined the Sigma Chi fraternity, at Bucknell University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1956. Throughout his school years, Arthur was a lifeguard in Margate, NJ and later was inducted into the Margate City Lifeguard Hall of Fame. Arthur served two terms as Captain in the US Army in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s.

Arthur’s 35-year career at Connecticut General Life Insurance Company, later to become Cigna Financial Corporation, spanned offices in Pittsburgh, PA, Rochester, NY and Chicago, IL. His roles grew from Sales Manager to Regional Chief Executive Officer for Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin. Arthur was inducted into Cigna's Hall of Fame prior to his retirement in 1991.

Arthur, a devoted supporter of Bucknell University, served on the Bucknell Board of Trustees from 1984 to 2005, and as an Emeritus Trustee until his death. Arthur spearheaded Bucknell’s highly successful fundraising campaign from 1995 to 2000. The Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium was dedicated in his honor in 2002. Arthur received the prestigious Stephen B. Taylor Medal, the university’s highest honor awarded to those who render extraordinary service to Bucknell.

A Barrington, IL resident since 1972, Arthur helped form the Barrington Hockey Club for high school varsity players in 1973. A lay leader at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Barrington, Arthur served two terms as Sr. Warden, as well as on many ministries. He was a kindhearted, generous, genuine friend to many.

Throughout his life, Arthur's most prominent characteristics were loyalty and an incredible sense of humor, both of which permeated all aspects of his life. The most common remembrances of Art invariably include how much he supported others and his ability to make people laugh.

Arthur is survived by his loving children Douglas Kinney (Edmee DekHuyzen), Laura Kinney (Artie Maidman), and Christopher Kinney; and grandchildren Julia Kinney, Marielle Kinney, Stephen Kinney, Benjamin Maidman, Erin Maidman, Grace Kinney and Sage Kinney.
