Bhagwant Kaur Sidhu

Mrs. Bhagwant Kaur Sidhu passed away at her home on April 19, 2021. Memorial and cremation services will be held at Davenport Funeral Home in Lake Zurich, IL on April 23, 2021.

Mrs. Sidhu was born in Rangoon (Yangon), Burma in 1933 and lived there and in India. At the end of World War II, she and her family traveled on foot from Rangoon to Calcutta (Kolkata), India, refugees of both that conflict and of the British Partition of India. She emigrated to the United States in 1963.

Mrs. Sidhu earned Masters degrees in Political Science and Library Science from Punjab University and the University of Chicago. She worked as a Research Librarian for the Planning Department of Lake County, IL, and as a Reference Librarian at the Barrington Area Library. In addition to her career, she served on the Planning and Zoning Board of the Village of Barrington, and was a founding member of the Sikh Religious Society in the late 1970s, where she acted as librarian, religious secretary, Sunday school teacher, and youth camp organizer.

She is survived by her two sons, Dilraj Singh and Inderjeet Singh; her daughter, Gurjot Kaur; her daughters-in-law, Nancy and Gurpreet Kaur; and five grandchildren, Himat Sidhu and Jivan, Priya, Zora, and Nayna Gandhi. She was predeceased by her husband, Harbans Singh Sidhu, and her four siblings.

Beyond her professional accomplishments and community involvement, Mrs. Sidhu was a style icon, Hallmark card aficionado, living room news pundit, and Bears fan. She was fearless, strong, and loving: devoted to her family, empathetic with strangers, and universal in her generosity.
