Carol Marie Averill

Carol Marie Zamow Averill of South Haven, Michigan died peacefully on October 7th in Deerfield, Illinois at the age of 87.  She was born to the late August and Margaret Zamow on May 1, 1933 in Watertown, South Dakota.

Carol is survived by her children Chris (Karen) Averill of Bartlett, Illinois, Sally (Jim) Haufschild of Barrington, Illinois, Peggy (John) Largent of New Albany, Ohio, Peter (Gayle) Averill of Newark, California, Suzanne (Alan Nadolna) Averill of Wilmette, Illinois, and David (Kelly) Averill of Seattle, Washington; 18 grandchildren; one great-grandson; a sister, LaVonne Byarlay of Versailles, Kentucky; and a brother, Douglas (Ann) Zamow of Coon Rapids, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Price Averill.

Carol married Richard on August 10, 1957. Carol and Richard traveled extensively both nationally and internationally, including Rotary Club mission trips to India and Africa.  Carol was passionate about her husband, Richard, her children, grandchildren, her extended family, community service, the Democratic Party, Lake Michigan sunsets, Sherman’s ice cream, gin & tonics, mystery trips, and finding treasures at yard, garage and estate sales.

Carol graduated from Watertown (South Dakota) High School in 1951.  She attended the College of Saint Teresa in Winona, Minnesota, and graduated from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1955 with a degree in Elementary Education.

Carol was a devout Catholic who dedicated herself to the service of others.  Carol was an active parishioner at St. Basil’s Catholic Church in South Haven, and volunteered with We Care, the South Haven Garden Club, and the South Haven Center for the Arts.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to We Care wecare-inc.org or The South Haven Arts Council www.southhavenarts.org
