Carole Lynne Mateljan

Carole Lynne Mateljan passed away on May 6, 2022 at the age of 77 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on November 20, 1944 in Chicago, IL.

As a teenager, Carole worked at Walgreens with her father who was a pharmacist. After graduating from Loyola University she became an 8th grade math teacher at Saint John Brebeuf Catholic School in Niles, IL. She continued her education earning a Master’s Degree from Loyola in Guidance Counseling. Carole taught at Saint John’s until she became a mother. Later, Carole enjoyed working as a substitute teacher for many years at St. Thomas School in Crystal Lake. She was an avid runner, biker, and walker. On May 24,1969 she married the love of her life, Peter Mateljan.

She is survived by her husband Peter; two daughters, Elizabeth (Paul) Stromberg and Theresa (Tim) Dalton; and her most cherished grandchildren Julianna, Madeline and Joshua. She was preceded in death by her parents, Marie and Peter Maggio. Carole was a loving mother who never missed a swim meet, pom competition, or school function for her daughters.

When Theresa became a teacher, Carole helped in her classroom every week until Julianna was born, when she then took care of Julianna so Elizabeth could continue working as a nurse. Carole lived for her grandchildren. She attended every important event including: school performances, volleyball and baseball games, and doctor appointments.

Carole and Peter enjoyed traveling and took their daughters on many adventures. During their retirement they continued their love of travel with family and friends. Highlights were trips to Ireland, Canada, Alaska, Vieques, St. Lucia, St. John and their favorite spot to spend the winter months with their wonderful group of friends: Marathon, Florida.

Carole was selfless and always put others before herself. Through her battle with cancer she never complained and fought hard to the end. Carole was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Mass will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 451 West Terra Cotta Avenue in Crystal Lake, at 10am on Thursday, May 12, 2022.
