Donald Ceas McLean passed from this world on Monday July 6, 2020 at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, Illinois. He was 91 years old.

Don is survived by his wife of 68 years, Betty McLean, his 7 children: Denise McLean (Michele Marx), Arlis McLean (Michael Melton), Kimberlee McLean, Brian McLean (Julie), Heather McLean, Melanie Witek (Kyle), and Lindsay Campe (Michael); 7 grandchildren: Lindsay Johnson, Tyler Howell-McLean (Cailly), Meredith McLean (Todd Carroll), Hannah McLean, Madeline Witek, Alex Campe (Marian Turner) and Hailey Campe; and two great grandchildren; Maren Howell-McLean and Amelia Turner. He is survived by two brothers, James McLean and Robert McLean and predeceased by his brother John (Jack) McLean and sister, Rosalee Ratterree (nee McLean).

Don was born on May 29, 1929 in Dixon, Illinois to Cecil John and Edna McLean. He graduated from Dixon High School in 1947, Phi Beta Kappa from Northwestern University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry in 1951, and was awarded a Masters of Science in Chemistry from Massachusetts Institute of Technology In 1953.

Don was employed for 35 years at Quaker Oats (Pepsi) in Barrington, Illinois, as a research chemist. He was a member of the Community Church of Barrington for 65 years, serving as a Trustee and Deacon.  He was a strong advocate for accessibility for the disabled in Barrington and in Illinois, having served on The Barrington Accessibility Committee and lobbied for laws in the State of Illinois to improve accessibility in the state.

In 1996, he was inducted into the Barrington Area Counsel on Aging (BACOA) Hall of Fame for his contributions as a dedicated volunteer to the community. In 1981, Don was nominated to the Chicago Disabled Person’s Hall of Fame for valuable work to improve the quality of life for disabled Chicagoans.  He served as the dedicated executive from Quaker Oats for the United Way for multiple years.

Don received a number of awards for his contributions to Scouting including the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service to young people and as Scoutmaster of Troop 21 in Barrington where he oversaw many young men’s achievement of obtaining the rank of Eagle Scout.

Don was an avid stamp collector, enjoyed a good card game, especially cribbage, and loved working on jigsaw puzzles with his family.
