Frances A. Sheffler

October 27, 1944 — November 22, 2022

Davenport Lake Zurich

Frances “Fran” Ann Sheffler, 78, passed away peacefully Tuesday November 22, 2022, in her home in Barrington, IL.

She was born October 27, 1944, in Braddock, PA, to the late Joseph and Nora “Eleanor” Pawlowski Sabol. She was the eldest daughter of eight siblings and loved living in a house full of family.

The first in her family to go to college, she received her bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Seton Hill University and taught high school math and hosted algebra parties for her daughters’ friends throughout their high school years. She got her master’s degree in counseling from Rider University and worked for years with at risk adolescent runaways in Trenton, NJ.

On August 12, 1967, she married Dr. Alvin Sheffler. Together they started a home in Morgantown, WV, where they raised their daughters Laura and Carissa. After living in East Windsor, NJ for many years, they lived abroad in Toulouse, France and Frascati, Italy, then domestically in Mesa, AZ, before moving to Barrington, Il to live there for over 20 years.

Fran was an avid traveler and visited Holland, England, Australia, New Zealand, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Spain with her husband and daughters. She took many photos on her trips of the architecture, the trees, and her family and arranged them in albums, captioned with jokes to make the whole family laugh for years to come.

An accomplished cook and baker, she is remembered by her recipes that she made with her family: stromboli, nut rolls, paska bread, pierogi, devil dogs, and French onion soup. Her Catholic faith was the foundation of her kindness, and she was dedicated to her vocation as a eucharistic minister. She was devoted to her teams: the Pittsburgh Steelers, Chicago Cubs, and of course, the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.

Fran was a beautiful and intelligent woman, a beloved daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, friend, and teacher. She was so strong and selfless. She loved spending time with her family and running through fields of red poppies. Her warmth, generosity, and humor are her legacies. She was a light that shines on in her friends and family. We will remember her laughter and smiles. We will miss her voice, countless questions, and her hugs, but her light will always be with us.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Al Sheffler, her daughters Laura Sheffler Kuzniar and husband Michael Kuzniar, Carissa Sheffler, her six grandchildren Michaela Kuzniar, Line Kuzniar, Julianna Kuzniar, Cormac Coen, Donovan Coen, and Dillon Coen, her eight siblings Raymond, Darlene, Ronald, Denise, Dennis, Donald, and Donna and their families.
