James E. Flurry

October 31, 1925 — September 10, 2019

Davenport Barrington

James Emory Flurry, passed away on September 10, 2019 at home in Deer Park at the age of 93. Jim was born on October 31, 1925 in Montgomery, Alabama.

He graduated from the University of Alabama where he met and married Norma Jean Gordon. Jean and Jim were married for 69 years. They had four children, Gail Lucile (deceased) (David Johnson), James Emory Jr. (Janis), Mary Beth and Debra Jean. Their loving family has grown to include 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren (and counting).

Prior to college Jim serviced in the Air Force during WWII. Upon graduating he worked as a marketing executive for various companies and advertising agencies in the Chicago area. He was asked by his neighbors to help in developing the Deer Park community as head of the planning commission and later served as a member on the Village Board for 25 years. Jim was a member of the Village Church for 40 years where he worshiped God but also demonstrated his skill in furniture building as he built cabinets, shelving and multiple items found within the church.

Furniture building was a hobby Jim developed after he retired. He built furniture for his family which he put a great deal of love and hard work into that will be passed on from generation to generation and cherished since they were hand made by “Pa”. Jim also enjoyed watching and feeding the birds that frequented his home. He was challenged however on how to feed the birds but not the squirrels that often ate all the food before the birds arrived. Jim and Jean loved traveling to Door County Wisconsin annually to frequent the local artist shops and take in the beauty of the fall colors. They always appreciated and supported the talent of local artists as their contribution to growing the arts.
