John F. Nordengren

John Francis Nordengren of Cary, IL passed away late on April 30th at his home with his wife, Louise by his side.  Born in Chicago on April 17th, 1937, John was the youngest of three children born to Swedish immigrants Albert and Elsie (Carlson) Nordengren.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Al Nordengren, of McHenry. John is survived by his wife, Louise (Finzel) of 59 years; his sister, Carol Larson of Chicago; and his children, Lori (Tim) Schneiderwind of Palatine, Mike (Jen) of Cary, and Sandie (John) Dostal of Brno, Czech Republic.  His legacy continues through his grandchildren: James, Caleb, Tyler, Hannah, Kyle, Samuel, Linnea, Bryce, Abram, Anya and Noah.

He was a longtime member of Living Grace Community Church in Cary (formerly Cary Grove EFC).  He served as Church Chairman, was active on the Properties and Shepherding Commissions, and then the Missions Commission until his recent hospitalization.  John played on church softball teams, coached several youth sports and worked with junior high and high school church youth groups.

Professionally, John held a Bachelor of Science degree from North Park College (University) and was for many decades an industrial safety engineer in loss prevention.  His work life included field and management positions with Liberty Mutual and Allstate Insurance companies. After his retirement, he continued to work with his hands in the field of carpentry.

John enjoyed traveling with his family across the US.  He particularly enjoyed exploring historical sites and wild natural places.  He helped construct a cabin in the north woods of Michigan where his children grew up on long weekends and school vacations. John’s stories of skiing, camping and canoeing trips inspired family and friends to experience the beauty and majesty of God’s creation.

On Saturday May 20th, Living Grace Community Church (1500 Silver Lake Road, Cary, IL 60013) will host a visitation from 10am -12pm followed by a memorial service at noon.

In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s name may be made to either of the following: Barrington Area Council on Aging @ 6000 Garlands Ln, Ste 100, Barrington, IL 60010. Specify “Adult Day Program” in the check memo line, or Living Grace Community Church .
