Joseph Paul Yaney

May 11, 1939 — May 19, 2020

Davenport, Lake Zurich

Dr. Joseph Paul Yaney, age 81, passed away on Tuesday, May 19, 2020, in Riverwoods, Illinois, as a natural progression of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Joe was born May 11, 1939, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, a great Mother’s Day present for his parents Mary (Kuratnick) and Alexander Yaney, Jr. As a young teenager, he lived in Beirut, Lebanon, while his father, Al, served in the State Department. He graduated from Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, Virginia. Then the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, became his home for many years as he achieved a BA Economics, MBA, J.D., and a Ph.D. in Business Administration. He also served as a Captain in the Adjutant General group at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Indianapolis, Indiana.

He and Barbara Longon were married in 1964. They had two children: Paul was born in 1968, and Monica in 1970. Joe was a Professor of Business at The Ohio State University, Penn State University, Texas Tech University, and finally, Northern Illinois University. He was also a published author of works in his professional field, a labor arbitrator with the American Arbitration Association, and an emeritus member of the State Bar of Michigan.

One of Joe’s favorite jobs, however, was being a father and grandfather. He was very involved in the lives of his children and grandchildren and proudly wore #1 Grandpa sweatshirts. He was an avid reader and never gave up using his IBM Flowchart template to organize and decorate letters he wrote just to share his love. His sweet tooth and love for Little Debbie snack cakes also endeared him to his family.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents Al and Mary Yaney; his brother, Mike Yaney; his young sister, Mary Ellen Yaney; and his son, Paul Yaney. He is survived by his daughter, Monica Tolva; his grandson, David Tolva; his granddaughters, Shannon Yaney and Sara Tolva; his daughter-in-law, Julie Yaney; two nieces; several cousins; and many faithful friends. His former spouse, Barbara Palmer, also remained a supportive and caring person to him.

Due to COVID-19 quarantine restrictions, a private funeral service will be held. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to Paul D. Yaney Memorial Engineering Scholarship, Northern Illinois University, Swen Parson 120, DeKalb, IL 60115
