Joshua Paul Puls, age 43, died unexpectedly at Tacoma General Hospital in Tacoma, Washington on Friday, September 4th, 2020 at 10:10pm.

Josh was born at Alexian Brothers Hospital in Elk Grove Village, IL on July 11th, 1977 to Gary & Susan (Carter) Puls. For most of Josh’s youth and adulthood, he resided in McHenry County, IL. In late November of 2019, Josh and his girlfriend Kristy (Lundeen) Shepard, her two children, Trenton Shepard (15) & Brianna Shepard (14) and their joint son Jacob Puls (10), moved to Tacoma Washington to be closer to Kristy’s parents.

On October 21st, 2000, Josh married Amanda (Goodson) Puls at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in McHenry. During their four-year marriage, the couple conceived two sons, William Christopher Puls (18) & Nathaniel Joshua Puls (17).

Josh graduated from the College of Lake County Community College in December 2007 with an associate degree in nursing (ADN). He went onto sit for his NCLEX exam and became a Licensed Registered Nurse in the state of Illinois from 2008-2018.

The majority of Josh’s nursing career was spent at Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin from 2008-2016 where he worked as a medical surgical floor nurse. Josh played a pivotal role as a committee member, assisting Sherman Hospital inachieving Magnet Status, an accredited recognition given to healthcare organizations that recognizes excellence in nursing care. He also contributed to the coordination of implementing, training, and transferring the hospital’s electronic charting system to EPIC.  Additionally, he was nominated for the Daisy Award, an award recognizing extraordinary nurses.

Josh advanced his nursing education, enrolling in Purdue University’s Online ADN to BSN bridge program, graduating with honors, with a bachelorette degree in the science of nursing in 2015.

Josh spent the last year of his nursing career at AMITA Health Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin from 2016-2017 where he worked as a PACU nurse crossed trained in conscious sedation and electroconvulsive therapy and was ACLS certified.

Josh was a fierce advocate for social justice reform and equal rights movements throughout the world. He believed that no matter one’s gender, race, culture, sexual orientation, financial status, or religious affiliation, everyone deserved fair treatment. Josh deeply believed that all people should receive love and kindness regardless of their past sins and shortcomings.

He will be remembered by his old-time Johnsburg friends for his love of hip hop, freestyle skills, and love for Wu-Tang Clan, remembered by his patients for his patient advocacy and compassion, and remembered by his family and loved ones for his deep empathy for the vulnerable, the suffering and the wounded.

Josh survived by his parents, his three sons, his maternal grandmother, Josephine Carter, his girlfriend, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was proceeded in death by his younger brother Jacob Puls, paternal grandparents, George and Clothide Puls and his maternal grandfather, Floyd Carter.

Visitation will be held Saturday, September 19, 2020 from 2pm until the time of the service at 4pm at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 419 E Terra Cotta Ave (Rt 176) Crystal Lake, IL. Masks will be required.

Interment will be private.
