Ken "Pop" Joy

January 25, 1927 — June 3, 2022

Davenport Crystal Lake

Kenneth D. Joy, 95 years young, passed away peacefully June 3, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Burlington, Iowa, the son of Dwight and Viola (Swygard) Joy, the younger brother of Louise and Jeanne. He lived his childhood during the Great Depression, was drafted shortly after the end of World War II, and became a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army. He went to the Milwaukee School of Engineering under the GI Bill, and earned a degree in Electrical Engineering. After realizing that was not his passion he worked at the A&P grocery chain, successfully managing many stores. He then worked for J.W. Allen as a bakery designer, plant maintenance and sanitation supervisor, and salesman for 23 years, until his retirement at the age of 68.

Ken had a passion for life. He was an avid fisherman, golfer, and bowler. He loved Elvis, the Hawkeyes from his beloved Iowa, playing the lottery and scratch-off tickets, spending afternoons at Arlington Race Track, creating special woodworking projects, working jigsaw puzzles, and playing all kinds of games with his loved ones; there was not a casino he could pass by without stopping in for a spin. He was a die-hard Cubs fan, and his lifelong dream came true when he was finally able to witness the Cubs win a World Series, and even attend the first game of that series. He loved to travel, and had the fortune to visit all 50 of the United States. He spent many fun filled vacations with family and friends, and cherished those times together. He never met a stranger; he made new acquaintances feel like old friends.

Ken had a warm, caring heart and a helping hand. He was the proud patriarch of his family. He reveled in large family gatherings with his paternal sense of pride, and loved being the center of their world. He had unconditional love for his family, and his courage and strength in fighting to stay with them were an inspiration to all who knew him. It comforts us to know that he is resting in peace, in the loving arms of his mother and father.

“Wherever we go, whatever we do, our days will begin and end with you.” Ken is survived by his loving wife Mary; his devoted children with his first wife Shirley: Mary (John), Kevin (Kathy), Chris, Debbie (Rich), and Lynne (Wayne); Jackie (Michael) and Mike (Erika), the loved children of his wife Mary; adoring grandchildren Kyle (Danielle), Kurt, Korhey (stillborn), Kendra (Zach), Kollin, Kelsey, Kade, Kara (Tom), Kraig, Kenny, Dylan, Kally (Dom), Keith, and Lizzi (Brandon); Mitchell and Samantha (Alex), loved grandchildren of his wife Mary; beloved great-grandchildren Makenzie, Morgan, Jaxson, Knox, Griffin, Harper, Hayden, Aleigha, Ashten, and Amelia. Ken deeply appreciated that Mary and Shirley became good friends, and we blended together as a family. Ken was also a dear uncle, brother-in-law, and cousin to many.

The visitation will be Tuesday, June 7th, from 4:00-9:00 p.m. at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave, Crystal Lake. Funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, June 8th at 10:00 a.m. Family will be receiving friends from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will follow at Windridge Cemetery, 7014 S. Rawson Bridge Rd, Cary, IL 60013.
