Norman F. Lagerquist

January 14, 1933 — August 1, 2020

Davenport Crystal Lake

Norman Frank Lagerquist was born on January 14, 1933, and passed away on August 1, 2020. Norman was a lifelong resident of the Chicago area. Relocating with family to the suburb of Palatine, Illinois in 1969, he resided the last five years in Lake Barrington, Illinois.

Norman attended Daniel Boone Elementary School in Chicago, then North Park Academy. An accomplished athlete in football, basketball and baseball, he was inducted into North Park Academy’s Viking Hall of Fame in 2010 as a member of the school’s first-ever undefeated football team (1949) and undefeated basketball team (1950). After graduating from North Park Academy, he attended Loyola University from 1950 to 1951.

Norman married Agnes Estelle Moe on May 22, 1954, after a chance meeting at the Hollywood Roller Skating Rink two years earlier.

A life-long career in the insurance industry began in 1951 at Lansing B. Warner Insurance Co. in Chicago.  He became a commercial insurance sales specialist, working at Warner’s from 1951-1959, and 1963-1974, followed by nineteen years at Kemper Insurance before retiring in 1993.

His active participation in sports continued when he played on adult softball teams and coached his sons Norman and Paul in Little League at Shabbona Park in Chicago. He enjoyed singing throughout his life. He was a member of Arion Male Chorus in Chicago from 1959 to 1964. His musical talent extended to instruments as well. He played accordion, and took up trumpet to play with his sons in a church band at Grace Evangelical Free Church.

He later attended Arlington Heights Evangelical Free Church, Willow Creek Community Church, and Harvest Bible Chapel.

He enjoyed crossword puzzles, southern gospel music, and travel.  Work travel brought him to locations throughout the Midwest. It was a special treat when the family was able to come along from time to time. Over the years, his travel destinations began to include favorites like Norway and Denmark.

A true gentleman, his outgoing personality, kindness, warmth, and quick sense of humor endeared him to all. Known affectionately by his two granddaughters, Carly and Emily, as ‘Papa’, he and wife ‘Aggie Grandma’ cherished time spent with them as they grew, and actively supported booster activities at their schools.

He is survived by his loving wife, Agnes Estelle (nee Moe) of 66 years; sons, Norman Paul of Lawndale, California and Paul Bryan of Cary, Illinois; and grandchildren, Carly Elizabeth (nee Lagerquist) McClain of Tampa, Florida and Emily Faith Lagerquist of Cary, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his father, Norman Cutlet Lagerquist; sister Nancy Virginia Lagerquist; mother Barbara Catherine (nee Mueller); and stepmother, Irma S. (nee Sellner) Lagerquist.
