Raymond L. Farrell, MD

Dr. Raymond Laurence Farrell, MD., age 80 of S. Barrington, IL. and Ludington MI. passed away on Monday October 11th, 2021. Raymond was born on December 22, 1940 in Oak Park IL.

He was the second son of Margaret and Edward Farrell.  Raymond married Judith M. Silander on December 3rd, 1966 in Chicago at St. Helena parish. He was a graduate of Oak Park River Forest high school, attended Loyola University for premedical studies and University of Illinois College of Medicine as Doctor of Medicine (MD).

Raymond served in the Navy for 8 years, based in Philadelphia.  From 1969 to 1970, Ray was transferred to the Marine Corps to serve a tour of duty as a physician in Vietnam. Upon returning from Vietnam, he completed a fellowship in Gastroenterology within the Naval forces. He retired on Oct 1, 1975 from the Navy as a Commander and worked as a physician for 35 years within academic medicine at SIU School of Medicine and a private practice he co-founded in Springfield IL. Ray retired in the Chicago area in 2008 to be close to his family where he continued to work as a physician for 3 years.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Judith Farrell of S. Barrington, three children Kristine (Steve) Thallemer of Cary, Lauren (Marcel) Haas of Naperville, Michael (Chandrika) Farrell of Schaumburg as well as seven grandchildren; Kaitlyn (25), Alyssa (21), Lindsey (17), Hailey (17), Karaline (15), Kieran (12), and Maya (8).  His brother, Jim Farrell of Knoxville, TN., and three nieces.

Aside from his passion of continuing education within medical sciences Raymond enjoyed caring for animals, reading mystery novels, summering in Ludington MI., and “snowbirding” in Florida.  Additionally, he was a devout Catholic, a member of St. Anne’s parish, and served as a eucharistic minister.

On Saturday, October 30th, 2021 a visitation will be held at St. Anne’s parish in Barrington IL., at 10:00 AM followed by an 11:00 AM funeral mass with reception to follow.
