Sandra "Sandy" Colleen Greene

August 8, 1954 — November 12, 2021

Davenport Crystal Lake

Sandra "Sandy" Colleen Greene, 67, of Crystal Lake, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, November 12, 2021, surrounded by her loving family, after a courageous two year battle with pancreatic cancer.

She was born on August 8, 1954, in Chicago, the daughter of Kenneth Johnson and Doris (née Bennett) Johnson. Sandy is survived by her loving husband of over 46 years, Paul Greene; her beloved children, Jennifer (Tony) Kaap, Elizabeth (Jason) Berg, Michael Greene, and Margaret (Phil) Greyson; her cherished grandchildren, Jackson and Carter Berg, and her loving siblings, Pam (Jim) Crowley, Jerry (Jennine) Johnson, and Greg Johnson, as well as her beloved nieces & nephews and other family & friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; by her brother, Doug; and by an infant brother, Jeremy.

Sandy graduated from Eisenhower High School in Blue Island and from Southern Illinois University Carbondale with a major in Music Education and a minor in Music Performance. She was an accomplished musician and played a number of instruments. Her primary instrument was the viola, which she played in earlier years as a member of the Chicago Youth Orchestra, the Southwest Symphony, the Southern Illinois University Symphony, the Fox Valley Symphony, and the Northwest Suburban Symphony.

After graduation from college, Sandy worked for a couple of years in central Illinois as a substitute teacher, a church choir director, and as a Public Service employee for the CETA (Comprehensive Employment Training Act) program. Later, after taking time to raise her children, she spent over 20 years in supervisory positions in retail stores in the Crystal Lake Area: Montgomery Ward, Kohls, Farm & Fleet, Sears, and Burlington Coat Factory.

A resident of Crystal Lake for over 37 years, Sandy was active in the community. She was proud of her volunteer services and teaching her children the importance of community service.  She joined the Crystal Lake Jaycees in 1988 and held various positions in the Jaycees, including Community Development Vice President (in which she directed 75 projects in her one year term) and President in 1994-1995. She especially enjoyed Jaycee programs such as Christmas baskets for the needy, Jail & Bail, the March of Dimes walk, and the MS bike ride. Sandy also volunteered in the community as the Gala 4th of July Parade Chairperson for 7 years, a Women of Today member and Treasurer, a member of the Lakeside Festival Board, and as a Dole Mansion volunteer.
