Sylvia Carmela (Rubino) Disabato

April 17, 1925 — February 23, 2020

Davenport Crystal Lake

Sylvia Disabato, 94, our beautiful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend peacefully passed away on February 23, 2020.  She was born on April 17, 1925 in Altoona, PA to Daniel and Bernadette Rubino.  After losing her mother at a young age, she was joined by her loving step-mother, Maria Rubino.  She was adored by her sisters who preceded her in death, Toni Carter and Nilda Boris.  She graduated from Altoona High School and worked at Sylvania Electric during WWII.

On November 12, 1945, she married the love of her life, Chris Disabato.  They raised their family, daughter, Christine and son, Alan in Blue Island, IL.  Here she worked at Robertson Transformer until she transitioned into her calling as a homemaker.  She was no ordinary homemaker.  There wasn’t a time where her home was not filled with the aroma of Italian flavor.  Her meals were unmatched as they were authentic and made with homegrown produce!  Her cookie tin was always filled with her famous Italian Anise or Lemon Drop cookies.  Homemade Pizelles and Biscottis were always a treat.  She and Chris were dedicated parishioners at St. Donatus Parish in Blue Island.  She faithfully cooked and participated in craft bizarres.  Anyone who received her crocheted creations knew the talent and patience given to them.  Her homemade stockings and annual ornaments were tokens of love and now treasures.  Pinochle with friends was a pastime, as well.  She had the gift in the lost art of letter writing.  To many, these were prizes received in the mail.

Sylvia was a servant at heart.  She not only served her community and church, but she was foremost the matriarch of her family.  She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.  Even with a large family, she was present for as many of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s events as physically possible.  In the hustle and bustle of life, she brought a sense of peace, quiet confidence, and humor wherever she was.  She taught us to treasure the simple things in life, and above all, love one another.

While she gracefully outlived many of her family and friends, she is now with her beloved, Chris, parents and sisters.

She is survived and traditions carried on by her children, Christine (Larry) Cannon of Crystal Lake and Alan Disabato of Lebanon, TN.

Her legacy lives on through her grandchildren, Shawn (John Tammi) Zambon, Chad (Torrie) Zambon, Shane (Mat Lincoln), Ryan Zambon, Quint Zambon, Ross Zambon, Kelly (Nathan) Turney, Susan (Rob) Marks, and Mark (Amy) Cannon.   Her great grandchildren will forever cherish her, Taylor Becker, Joshua Coe, Kendall and Charlie Zambon, Evan and Tate Lincoln, Isabelle, Ethan, and Aliya Turner, and Sydney and Logan Marks.

We will celebrate Sylvia’s life on Sunday, March 8, from 11:00 am until the time of a funeral service at 2:00 pm at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake.    She will be laid to rest with her beloved, Chris, on Monday, March 9, at 11:30 am at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, 20953 W. Hoff Rd., Elwood, IL 60421.
